The future of Virtual desktops

Prediction: CIUS combined with Citrix XenDesktop running on Cisco UCS will be the most rapidly adopted Virtual Desktop platform ever!

Imagine: It’s a phone, Tablet, PC (via Citrix) Wifi, 4G and a corporate owned and managed asset. Effectively the CIUS device is to  Enterprise level companies what the IPad was to the consumer market.

Applications Capabilities:

  • 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, 3G/4G data and Bluetooth 3.0 help employees stay connected on and off-campus.
  • HD video (720p) with Cisco TelePresence solution interoperability for lifelike video communication with the simplicity of a phone call
  • Virtual desktop client (Citrix Receiver) enables highly secure access to cloud-based business applications
  • Android operating system, with access Android marketplace applications
  • Collaboration applications including Cisco Quad, Presence, IM and integrated, one-click access to WebEx Meeting Center

Tablet Highlights:

  • 7” diagonal, high-resolution color screen with contact-based touch targets delivers an elegant, intuitive experience
  • HD media station supports Bluetooth and USB peripherals, 10/100/1000 wired connectivity and a handset option
  • Detachable and serviceable 8-hour battery for a full day of work
  • Highly secure remote connections with Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
  • HD audio with wideband support (tablet, HD media station)

Terminal Services versus VDI: Brian’s presentation from VMworld Europe

Two years old but still very true. If more customers watched this video I would spend far less time on airplanes…

“In this presentation, I focus on when you’d use TS and when you’d use VDI. It’s important to note that I don’t talk about VDI versus traditional desktops or TS versus traditional desktops since in today’s world both TS and VDI are different forms of server-based computing (SBC). So in order to figure whether TS or VDI “wins” in your environment, you first need to figure out which applications can work via server-based computing. Then you can figure out which of those are most appropriate for VDI and which are most appropriate for TS”

Connecting to VM Pool using Windows Server 2008 R2 VDI infrastructure

This videos shows you the connection to a VM in a VM Pool in a VDI infrastructure. The infrastructure contains one host running AD, DNS, PKI, Hyper-V R2, RD Virtualization host, one VM running RD Session host, RD Connection broker, RD Web Access, 2 Windows 7 Enterprise VM for the pool.

Virtual Desktop / VDI Calculator

The VDI calculator is targeted for VMware View designs, however you can use the calculator for any VDI running on top of vSphere infrastructure. Please leave your comments or questions below.Recommended Practices to follow:
Number of Desktop Pools: it will ERR more than 512 VM’s per pool.
Concurrent Users: Concurrent users is different from Number of VMs
%Used memory: 80%
%Shared Memory: 40% or 50% (if all desktops running same OS)
Host redundancy: No host redundancy is included in the calculations
Fill all fields as they somewhat relate to each other.
